Giovanni Scelzi Scores Another Top Five in Sprint Car and Win in Micro Sprint

Inside Line Promotions – LEMOORE, Calif. (Aug. 7, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi is relishing a consistent summer that has led to more than a half-dozen victories and many top-five finishes.

Scelzi continued to heat up the track during two events this weekend. He recorded a top five in a winged sprint car to give him eight top 10s in 10 career starts and he was victorious during a micro sprint race.

“We’re getting better every weekend,” he said. “It’s nice to have everything lining up. We’re having good weekends almost every time out so it’s great to have this momentum.”

The weekend began on Friday at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, Calif., where Scelzi piloted a sprint car for Roth Motorsports. He timed in second quickest during qualifying before advancing from fourth to second place in a heat race to make the dash.

“I felt really good and wasn’t much off quick time,” he said. “The track was hooked up all night and there wasn’t much passing so I felt good with our performance in the heat race and dash.”

Scelzi ended sixth in the dash to start the main event on the outside of the third row.

“I got to third early in the race and made a few mistakes throughout the race,” he said. “The track was so fast. There’s things I’m still learning to do with taking air off the nose of other cars. The veterans are doing it to me and that cost me a little. I’m learning more and more every race. I feel like with more experience and more time in a race car we will continue to learn and correct those mistakes.”

Scelzi settled for a fifth-place result, which was his 16th top five of the season. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/QPvzjZpH1zo.

The weekend wrapped up on Saturday at Lemoore Raceway, where he drove his family owned micro sprint. Scelzi qualified third quickest before he won a heat race. That lined him up on the inside of the third row for the 30-lap main event.

“I qualified good and we were really good in the heat,” he said. “In the feature I got to the lead about eight laps in running the bottom. I got a car about every two laps. I was running the bottom and everyone was pretty much on the top. About halfway through there was a caution. (Jake) Hagopian got next to me on the cushion before the yellow came out. I moved to the cushion after that and pulled away.”

The win was Scelzi’s seventh of the season in a micro sprint. Here is a link to watch the race: https://youtu.be/n6jNyBrUZ0w.

He is scheduled to return to micro sprint action this Friday at Plaza Park Raceway in Visalia, Calif.
